We all know that just because you can buy a beautiful looking piece of produce in the market during any given month of the year, doesn’t mean you should. Sure, it can be tempting to purchase a case of blood red strawberries in say, February, but that little voice in the back of your mind is probably saying, Hey, where do you think those are actually growing this time of year?
With fabulous warm weather on the horizon, the bounty of summer’s harvest is upon us, and we can feel good about buying fresh produce – in season produce, that is – from the market again. According to the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture, (CUESA), here are some of your best bets for delicious, seasonal produce that’s ripe for June:
Some fruits you might find at your local Farmers Market are: plums, cherries, apricots, avocados, blueberries, peaches, grapefruit, and rhubarb.
Vegetables that are in season and available now include: arugula, asparagus, cucumbers, leeks, kale, fava beans, peas, and peppers, amongst many others.
Despite how many of these fruits and vegetables can be found year-round at your supermarket, almost all of them have peak seasons in June, making this the perfect time to indulge in the best produce available. Shopping locally for produce from Farmers Markets is not only great for your local economy, but also a fantastic way to be reminded of what’s in season and most delicious right now.
